Upcoming Events & Information

Confirmation Sunday will be held October 21 at the Late Service.
COMMUNION WILL BE HELD AT BOTH SERVICES on October 21 to maintain our regular communion calendar for the third Sunday of the month at 8:15, and also to provide the Lord’s Supper for our Confirmands at 10:45 A.M.

LWML SUNDAY is October 7!
Come and celebrate the work of the International Lutheran Women’s Missionary League with us!  Guest preacher is our Bishop emeritus, the Rev. Dr. David Ritt, who will be conducting our services that day!  New Mite Boxes will be available for one and all…and you will have an opportunity to give your present Mite Box offering to the mission cause during both services.  We thank Pam Zimmer and Jenna Young, who will serve as lectors for this special service!

The Public Examination
of our 5 Confirmands is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 7 PM in our Church Library.  At that time, each student will demonstrate his/her proficiency in the Word of God and in its teachings as the pastor and elders question them regarding their chief part of study and regarding other matters related to the Christian faith.   In preparation for this event, our students have completed a worksheet composed of 168 questions for which they are responsible in the various areas of study.  Would you like to take this review?  See Pastor Boelter if you would like to test your proficiency in God’s Word!

Witness Sunday October 14 -
Five of our youth will make public testimony of their faith in Christ and confirm their baptismal vows this month.  Confirmed will be: Alejandro Caragay, Jenna Isherwood, Jenna Mullinger, Kayla Lewis and Abigail Newman.  Our Confirmands will assist Pastor Boelter in conducting the 10:45 A.M. Service on October 14th.  Their confessions of faith will take the form of short testimonies showing how the 6 chief teachings of the Catechism are part and parcel of our Divine Worship each Sunday.  Each confirmand has written an essay on his/her assigned chief part, and those essays will be presented to the congregation as a devotional booklet to be read the following week at home.  Each confirmand has also prepared a beautiful banner depicting God’s work in their individual lives, which will beautify our worship for two weeks.  Please keep each of these 5 catechumens in your prayers, that God the Spirit would work mightily in their lives, and that they will forever remain faithful to their God and Savior.

A Special Voter’s Assembly – will be held Sunday, October 14 at Noon.
Purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the new constitution approved by our Vestry and approved by our District Constitution Committee.  Please come so that you will have a clear understanding of the changes being made to the formal, legal operating document of our congregation as a not-for-profit entity, and as a fellow congregation of the English District and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Our Treasurer Lisa Shrader
…will be going back to college to further her education in a few months, and will not be able to continue her duties as our Treasurer.  We are in need of a person or several people to faithfully continue the duties that Lisa has so faithfully performed.  Thanks to Lisa’s gifts and experience, she was able to help us put our financials back together after our crisis, and develop a wonderful system of accountability for our funds.  If you have the gifts necessary, would you consider stepping up to assist our congregation at this time?  Thank you, Lisa, for your tireless work on behalf of God’s Kingdom at CtK!  We are thankful to God for you and your family!

Reformation Sunday/OctoberFest
For our celebration of the Festival of the Reformation, we will be holding ONE SPECIAL SERVICE at 10:00 A.M. with Holy Communion on October 28th!  Come join us as we celebrate our Lutheran Christian Heritage and worship with a service patterned after Luther’s German Mass, wherein parts of the liturgy are sung to familiar hymns!  Communion will be celebrated in continuous fashion that day!

THEN…OctoberFest!!!
Join us for bratwurst, sauerkraut and a host of ethnic and American foods and beverages on our Lochmoor Lawn …once again under tent cover!  This day will be a great experience for all…so come and worship, then join us for dinner!  Let’s celebrate the heart of our heritage…God’s grace given to us in Christ Jesus by faith!  Festive music and activities are planned.  Get out your leiderhosen and bring some kuchen to share!

A Special Thank-You Breakfast is being planned
…by our Youth for Sunday, November 11 at 9:30 A.M.  They will serve breakfast to our congregation in appreciation for the tremendous support given making possible their trip to the National Youth Gathering in Orlando, FL this past July.  Along with breakfast, ALL SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES AND ADULT BIBLE CLASSES will meet together in our Large Auditorium for a special presentation of their experiences and what they learned at the Gathering.  So please come for a good breakfast as we gather to hear about the great experience our Youth (and their parents) had this summer.  Then worship with us at either 8:15 or 10:45!

Our Shepherds
…continue to assist the Pastor and Elders in our care giving ministry.  Shepherds, please mark your calendars for a one-hour update meeting with the Pastor and Elders to be held Monday evening, October 29, 2007 in our Library at 7 PM.

Findlay Flood Relief

Thank you to everyone who participated in the special love offering sent to our Pastor emeritus Joseph Fabry and Shirley.  The Fabrys have sent two beautiful letters thanking the members of our congregation for the help sent when the floodwaters of the Blanchard River and the water table rose in Findlay Ohio in August, damaging the Fabry’s home and 900 other homes in their locale.  Pastor and Shirley are in the process of cleaning and reconstructing their basement this time.  The letters from the Fabrys have been posted on easels in our welcome center for everyone to see, along with pictures of the floodwaters and the aftermath.   We thank our Lord that the Fabrys are safe, and are filled with faith and courage after this life-changing experience.  On the back of one envelope, Pastor and Shirley placed a sticker saying:  “The Earth is the Lord’s (from Psalm 24:1).”  They added:  “It sure is!”  God bless you, Pastor and Shirley, for your continued example of faith to us all, especially in a time of crisis.

Evangelism
We are planning a walk-thru of our neighborhoods on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 10 AM.  Our purpose will be to distribute fliers containing information about our Sunday School, Preschool and Church Holiday Worship to approximately 300 homes from Mack to Harper and west of Vernier.  This is a very easy, low level form of evangelism to invite our neighbors to know us, and to worship with us or attend one of the many events that we will host during Thanksgiving and Christmas.  If you like to walk, please consider joining us.  We will specifically walk from 10 AM until noon on the 13th, however should you desire to walk another time, we will assign you a street and you may distribute your fliers from October 13th until October 20th.  A sign up sheet will be in our welcome center!

Preschool News …

Preschool has officially begun for our 2007-2008 school year.  We have 75 students who are very busy enjoying all the projects, painting, play dough, story time, Jesus time, and the many fun things we do.  We have openings for all of our age groups – threes, fours, and young fives – and will accept registrations at any time.

We would like to officially welcome our new teacher to our staff, Ms. Jill Farrar.  Jill teaches a three’s, four’s, and young five’s class.  We are so blessed to have her as an addition to our preschool.  Please welcome her and introduce yourselves to her as you see her around the church.

We have some exciting things happening in October.  The four year old and young fives’ classes will be going on a field trip to Blake’s Big Apple on October 10.  We go on a hay ride, pick apples, run through corn mazes, eat doughnuts and drink cider.  It’s a fun day for children and parents!

Our cookie dough fundraiser will take place in October.  We will be selling cookies and popcorn October 15-29.  Delivery day for the orders is on November 14.  If you would like to place an order, please see a preschool committee member.  We would love to place an order for you.  This cookie dough is great for all of your holiday baking.

Please keep all of the preschool teachers, aides, parents and children in your prayers as we feed His little lambs and grow in God’s grace.  Thank you for all of your support! - Sharon Ziegler

Fall High School Bible Class!

Starting Sunday, September 16th at 9:30 A.M. CtK's high school students will begin a 12-week comparative study of Christianity and other religions, cults or groups opposed to our historic, orthodox faith.   In a society which bombards us with messages that we should be tolerant and accepting of all faiths, Christians are often criticized and made fun of for believing in Jesus Christ as the only, true Son of God. Not only will this study identify the differences between Christianity and the beliefs of these false religions, but it will help us to understand the often subtle ways Christian terms are used by some of these cultic groups to deceive us.  In addition, we will focus on strengthening our own faith in God's Word and the Sacraments in order to discern the pitfalls which tempt weaker Christians to join these groups.  This class will be led by Steve Curtis and Brad Marshall and will be based on the theme "One God, Many gods".  Please be in prayer for our youth as we begin this study together.

Sunday Bible Study:

The Book of Genesis Bible Study
We all have experienced joining a serious conversation that was already in progress when we arrived.  We may gradually gain some insight into the basis of the discussion and even offer our input, but we are never quite certain whether what we are saying is entirely relevant to the root of the issues.
This can happen in our faith life, too.  We join the great debate of the ages regarding the existence and authority of God.  We hear the Gospel and doctrine.  We are taught and entertained by seemingly insightful alternatives presented by current authorities.  We may find ourselves uncertain of the relevance of our faith - is it just a personal opinion, or is it founded on something solid and authoritative?

Join us at the beginning of God's conversation with man as we study the book of Genesis.  Through a careful reading of God's Word we will gain an understanding of the clear, solid foundation of our faith.  We will discover His intentions and our relationship to them.  Our study begins September 30th in the Library.  Come and join us!

Mission Minute:  The Friends of Mercy: Adopt-an-Orphan - $28/Month

Our Lord, Jesus Christ, sacrificed the holy and pure existence of heaven to be born a man to live in this sinful and painful world. His sacrifice to pay for our sins was His love to us.  His love for us comes through the Church in Word and Sacraments. As baptized children of God, we love God by loving others. This is true whether you are in Nairobi, East Africa, or at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Friends of Mercy provides local congregations in the U.S. with an opportunity to share the love of Christ by helping build orphanages and a boarding school for 500 girls of the Maasai tribe. This fall, the Friends of Mercy will launch Lutheran Cancer & Hospice Society. Now is a great time to donate because of the matching grant from LCMS World Relief
We are so blessed, yet it isn't wrong to enjoy the blessings our Lord bestows upon us, whether it is a new car or going out for dinner. However, once you have an opportunity to see the great work that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya is doing with and for orphans in East Africa, it keeps life in perspective.
The orphans live in such poor conditions, especially in the slums. Many grandparents and great-grandparents try to step in and care for the children. Many parents are dying by the time they are thirty years old. When you travel around East Africa, it becomes apparent that there is an entire generation that is gone - from HIV\AIDS. $28 will feed, clothe, educate, provide a home, providing the essentials for an orphan for one month. One child, at $28 a month is $336 a year.

HOW IT WORKS: When you send your Adopt-an-Orphan gift of mercy to Friends of Mercy, it is submitted for a matching gift from LCMS World Relief and to Thrivent Financial (when applicable). When the gifts are matched, they are in turn sent to Kenya to support children in a specific orphanage. The funds will be used by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya (ELCK) to provide "room and board" for a child in an existing orphanage. To save on administrative costs and because of the local culture, Friends of Mercy doesn’t assign a specific child who will communicate with a person who "Adopts an Orphan." Rather, the orphanage is assigned and the donor will receive photos, information, updates, etc., at least twice a year from several children in the orphanage.

ORPHANAGES IN THE VILLAGES: The ELCK believes in building orphanages in the midst of the local village where there is a local Lutheran church. The ELCK works through the local pastor and congregation to identify land, build the facilities, and provide a program to care for AIDS Orphans in and around the village. Many family members still desire to help raise the orphans in their villages, however, they don't have the means to add on to their mud and dung huts, nor do they have the means to feed the children and provide the money to enroll in the public school system. So, by building the orphanages in the village, the extended family remains in contact to assist and help raise the orphans. The orphans are not "sent off" to the orphanage, rather, the orphanage becomes a place for the orphans to sleep, receive food and clothing, academic and Lutheran education, and remain a member of the village.
When you give to Friends of Mercy, your gift will provide the badly needed funds to provide for the orphans in the context of the village and local congregation.  Because the children have family in the village where their orphanage is located, often the children will come and go from the orphanage as they sometimes sleep in the homes of their extended families or in the orphanage itself. Therefore, the food, clothing, education, etc. will support many more children that the 28 who live "full time" in the orphanage. This is why a specific child is not assigned in our Adopt an Orphan program. Your gift will support the needs of orphans in an orphanage.

"The need is so great in Kenya," declares Rev. Mark Sell, Executive Director of Friends of Mercy, "it's hard to know where to begin." Five hundred people die each day in Kenya from AIDS. Most leave children. The result is that there are nearly 3,000,000 orphans. Many will be cared for by family members, but many have no family left. Where will they go?

Designate your gift to Friends of Mercy and give here at Christ the King, or contact LCMS World Relief, or call The Friends of Mercy at 1-877-31-MERCY.

New Worship Service
Monday Evening Worship at 7:00 P.M.
Responding to the survey taken regarding a weekday service for those who can not attend Sunday worship due to work schedules, a MONDAY evening service will be held THE SECOND AND FOURTH MONDAYS of the month at 7:00 P.M. with Holy Communion.  The first service will be held MONDAY, May 14th.  The service will be more informal in nature, but will follow our Lutheran form of worship, and will be approximately 45 minutes in length.  There will be NO Monday service on Memorial Day.  The June dates will be Monday, June 11th and Monday June 25th.  We hope this service will provide blessing to our families and individuals who work each weekend.

A Big “Thank You!”
The Board of Trustees would like to thank the following business for volunteering to maintain our church lawn this season: Greg Davis Landscape Services – full service landscape construction and maintenance - 313-884-1409.Please show your appreciation by giving Greg the opportunity to estimate maintenance of your lawn or your next landscape project!   We would also like to thank Jacques Beaudoin for providing the spring fertilization of our lawn.

Sunday School Happenings
We are excited to announce that we now have our own Sunday School Information pamphlet. They will be available at our Welcome Center. We encourage you to take them and share the information with any young families in your neighborhood who may not already have a church home. We have a wonderful children’s Ministry at CtK and we want to reach as many children as we can to share with them the wonderful message of Jesus’ saving love.

Recycle Paper and help CtK
We now have two paper recycling bins outside the church for paper and magazines (in the parking lot near the lake-side fence).
Christ the King gets money for every ton of paper that is collected, so bring all you have!  Please No Plastic!

NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CURRICULUM:

Growing in Christ” is an exciting new curriculum series produced by Concordia Publishing House which includes interactive materials for both teachers and students.

There will be four key sections in each lesson this year:

  • Opening  provides time for an activity that helps introduce the key thought for the day.
  • God Speaks  is the time to share the Biblical event, using various teaching techniques and strategies.
  • We Live  applies the Biblical event to the lives of teachers and students.
  • Closing  provides a number of activities not only to review, but to reinforce the key point of the lesson.

Key parts of the Catechism will also be included in all lessons to help children prepare for Confirmation. “Faith Word Cards” will instill the language of the faith to every child.  We are very excited about this new and improved curriculum and we hope your family will be enriched and strengthened through the Word of God this year

FUN AND EXCITING FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY
Olympia Entertainment (Joe Louis Arena) has established a program whereby various non-profit organizations partner with Olympia Entertainment to work in the concession stands during the Red Wing games in exchange for a percentage of the profits.  Olympia Entertainment provides the product, place and guests – the volunteers just have to concentrate on the selling!

Christ the King will be availing itself to program.  We will be allowed to work 9-10 games over the course of the season.  Christ the King will have to provide at least 12 people per game. The volunteers need to be 18 years or older.  All volunteers are to work approximately 6 hours which includes 2 1/2 hours before game time, and 1/2 hour after the game. For example, call time for a 7:30 P.M. game would be 5 P.M.
Our organization will earn 9% of the net profits for the first 9 games and if we work more than 9 we would earn 10% of the net profits for 10 games and above.
Volunteers can work one game or as many as they want.  This is a wonderful opportunity to not onlyraise funds for CtK but for fellowship.  Although we can not actually watch the game on the ice, we will be in Joe Louis arena having fun together.
Anyone wishing to volunteer may contact Diane Wyrock at either 248-358-4560 or 313-885-7737.

Another Opportunity for CTK to Make a Difference

Those who have joined us working the concession stands at Joe Louis Arena have met Donna Lesperance, one of the Non-Profit Group Managers at the Joe.  Donna has informed us that her parish, St. Dunstan Roman Catholic Church has suffered an embezzlement of over 2 million dollars and is experiencing the hurt and turmoil that we endured two years ago.  We have a perfect opportunity to bring the Lord’s comfort and assurance of His help to the members of St. Dunstan by writing letters of encouragement, and letting them know that we also walked this tragic path but prevailed with the Lord Jesus as our Leader.  If you would like to join us in writing notes of encouragement and sharing your trust and confidence in the Lord with the members of this congregation and their leaders, you may do so by October 15th.  Please bring your letter to the church office.  We will collect them and give them to Donna Lesperance to share with her fellow believers.  St. Dunstan Roman Catholic Church is located in Garden City, MI.  Let’s share our faith and remind others that “in everything God works for good to those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).
